truly original

i took a trip to the metropolitan museum of art this weekend (the met). i was amazed at the level of detail, the time it must have taken for Rembrandt to paint his portraits, the time it would have taken to paint a Dutch landscape or a fantastic view of the Venetian piers, for the hours spent carving a Gandharan statue or building a Tibetan mandala. it strikes me that, in any age, be that 14th century or 9th century or 21st, art takes time to build; art is meticulous, painstaking, all-consuming. it is not: immediate self gratification, flash in the pan, it is not tied to the knowledge of some random pop culture moment; it is grander than its moment and it stands the test of time.
