the value of commonly accepted wisdom

you know, commonly accepted wisdom may not be so bad. when you acknowledge the physics of a situation it works out for the better, particularly when our survival as human beings is being discussed.

want to lose weight? count calories.
want to run 10 miles? start with 5 and work up.
want to survive in the cold for 10 hours? wear warm clothes

but then there are SO many situations where commonly accepted wisdom does not work. when it comes to stretching the mind, the heart and the limits of imagination, it does not work, probably not at all.

hmm. like the orange juice diet? or any dating rules at all ever? or the newly renewed popularity of the onions-collect-disease urban myth?
